Update your Twitter via SMS at No Extra Cost
A month back, Twitter and AirTel joined hands to offer Twitter via SMS, and the service was available exclusively to Bharti AirTel customers. Moreover, customers were charged premium rates for every SMS. SMSTweet, available at smstweet.in, is a free service, where you’ll send your tweets to a 10-digit Tata Indicom number, so you end up paying only normal/national SMS rates, which is far cheaper than premium rates or sometimes free based on your network.
How do I signup?
You have two options to associate your number with your twitter account
Using OAuth: This is the simplest and the recommended option. Click ‘Sign in with Twitter’ and you’ll be taken to the authentication page to allow SMSTweet access your account. Once you’ve granted permission, you’ll be taken back to the homepage where you’ll have to key-in your number to finalize the process
Register via SMS: Just shoot an sms TWEET REGISTER <twitter username> <twittter password> to 0-92200-92200
How do I tweet via SMS?
Once you’ve signed up, start SMSing your tweets in the format TWEET <message> to 0-92200-92200 and you’ll have your tweets posted to your account in seconds. Upon successful updation, you’ll be responded with the latest @mention of yours.
Update: The number mentioned above is based in Mumbai. You can also register/send your tweets to the other Karnataka number – 92430 00111, in case you live in Karnataka, you’ll be charged local rates. If you are outside Mumbai/Karnataka, you could be charged at National SMS rates based on your network operator.
About SMSTweet
SMSTweet runs on Google-App Engine and uses SMSGupShup as the gateway to receive and respond to your tweets. The guy behind the service is Mayank Sharma (twitter @mayanks)
My SMS to local delhi numbers are free, so I wanna ask that is that TATA no. a delhi no?
Hi Prabhav, that’s a Mumbai number. So messages sent to the number will be billed as National SMS for you.
It would be better if i activate national sms plan on my vodafone mobile so that i can tweet for free.. :)
Yes, that’s the problem with Indian networks. At least, Aircel, in TN, gives out free national SMS credits on its postpaid plans.
I hate laziness. I had written on the same topic few weeks back and it is still in my draft(I was busy with exams). BTW you forgot to mention about other number. There are two gateways one is in Bangalore and other is in Mumbai.
Ah yes! Thanks for reminding. Updated the post :)
